Hogere productiviteit en meer toegevoegde waarde leveren voor de eindklant.
IT is steeds belangrijker voor organisaties om de concurrentie een stap voor te blijven. Project “Sandbox” zorgt voor meer betrokkenheid van de organisatie als het gaat om IT. Léon Boers is consultant bij 3fifty en vertelt over zijn ervaring bij het project dat hij samen met collega Maik van der Gaag uitvoert bij een internationale accountants- en adviesorganisatie. Ze maken gebruik van Azure DevOps en gaan Agile te werk om hun IT-diensten en -producten te leveren.
Speeltuin om nieuwe oplossingen te testen
Project “Sandbox” is ongeveer 2 jaar geleden gestart omdat er bij interne klanten (de “eindklant”) een behoefte is aan het zelfstandig opzetten van SaaS-applicaties en andere clouddiensten. Zie het als een speeltuin waarin je nieuwe oplossingen kunt testen en uitproberen, terwijl er toch aan de geldende beveiligings- en complianceregels wordt voldaan. De medewerkers krijgen een Azure omgeving waarin ze diverse cloudservices zelf kunnen ontwikkelen.
Volledig geautomatiseerd
Het proces voorheen was dat interne klanten hun IT-vraag bij de IT-afdeling neerlegden. Wanneer de aanvraag gedaan was, werden de daaropvolgende acties handmatig uitgevoerd. Dit zijn bijvoorbeeld het regelen van losse componenten zoals een Azure Tenant, subscripties en de veiligheidsmaatregelen als standaardinstellingen en policies. Nadat de aanvraag is voltooid krijgt de interne klant toegang tot de juiste resources om te starten. Dit proces is nu volledig geautomatiseerd. De interne klant vult een formulier in en na akkoord wordt de omgeving direct uitgerold. Hierbij worden ook alle regels voor wat betreft security en governance toegepast. Deze geautomatiseerde uitrol is volledig in de cloud opgezet en maakt gebruik van componenten als Azure Functions, Logic Apps en API apps.

Agile en Azure DevOps
Het team werkt Agile en volgens de Azure DevOps-methodiek. Dit leidt er onder andere toe dat nieuwe features binnen een bestaande oplossing snel worden toegevoegd en uitgerold. Nieuwe features zijn bijvoorbeeld dat er naast een Azure-subscriptie nu ook direct een Devops-project voor de interne klant wordt aangemaakt. Ze worden gefaciliteerd met aangeleverde voorbeelden hoe zij zelf via ‘Infrastructure as a Code’, Azure-producten kunnen uitrollen. Hoe beleeft Léon dit project? Léon Boers, 3fifty: “De inzet van DevOps zorgt voor sneller opleveren van diensten en producten. Doordat in het team vertegenwoordigers van verschillende afdelingen zitten, denk hierbij aan security en productmanagers, kunnen we snel keuzes maken. Dat betekent dat we snel knopen doorhakken over welke nieuwe producten we gaan implementeren en hoe we dat doen. Of welke producten we verder gaan verbeteren. Zelfs bij een grote internationale organisatie kunnen we hierdoor autonoom werken. Dat is fijn!”
Nauwe samenwerking werpt vruchten af
Léon werkt samen aan dit project met 3fifty collega Maik van der Gaag. Ze werken samen in een dynamisch team van ongeveer 7 mensen waarbij ze de rol van architect, consultant en developer vervullen. Léon vertelt: “Door een nauwe samenwerking met de opdrachtgever kunnen wij onze expertise optimaal inzetten. Als voorbeeld; Tijdens de implementatie van het Azure DevOps-project liepen we tegen het probleem aan dat de bestaande oplossing die we hadden, onnodig complex was. Hierdoor zou het onderhoud en het toekomstig verder uitbouwen van deze oplossing onnodig veel tijd kosten. We hebben gezocht voor een alternatief en zijn hierbij bij Terraform terecht gekomen. Hoewel dit product nog niet in gebruik was, hebben we dit als DevOps-team onderzocht. Nadat de oplossing zowel technisch, als beveiligingtechnisch aan de eisen voldeed, is de oplossing in gebruik genomen.”
De volgende stap is het maken van oplossingen waarbij het IT-team zelf in contact komt met de interne klant en zelfstandig features kan aanbrengen ter verbetering. Zo sluiten de features steeds beter aan bij de wensen van de eindklant en innoveren ze op een steeds sneller tempo.

Playground to test new solutions
The “Sandbox” project started about 2 years ago because internal customers (the “end user”) have a need to independently set up SaaS applications and other cloud services. Imagine a playground where you can test and try new solutions, while still complying with applicable security and compliance rules. The employees are given an Azure environment in which they can develop various cloud services themselves.
Fully automated
Previously, this process was for internal customers to submit their IT questions to the IT department. When the request was made, subsequent actions were performed manually. These are, for example, arranging individual components such as an Azure tenant, subscriptions and the security measures such as default settings and policies. After the request is completed, the internal customer is given access to the right resources to start. This process is now fully automated which promotes productivity. The internal customer fills in a form and after approval the environment is rolled out immediately. All rules regarding security and governance are applied. This automated rollout is fully set up in the cloud and uses components such as Azure Functions, Logic Apps and API apps.

Agile and Azure DevOps
The team works the Agile way and according to the Azure DevOps methodology. This means, among other things, that new features within an existing solution are quickly added and rolled out. New features are, that in addition to an Azure subscription, a Devops project is now also created for the internal customer. They are facilitated with examples provided of how they can deploy Azure products via “Infrastructure as a Code” themselves.
How does Léon experience this project? Léon Boers, 3fifty: “The use of DevOps ensures faster delivery of services and products. Because the team includes representatives from different departments, such as security and product managers, we can make choices quickly. This means that we can instantly make decisions about which new products we are going to implement and how we do that. Or which products we will further improve. This allows us to work autonomously even at a large international organization. That’s nice!”
Close cooperation is paying off
Léon is collaborating on this project with 3fifty colleague Maik van der Gaag. They work together in a dynamic team of approximately seven people in which they fulfill the role of architect, consultant and developer. Léon explains: “By working closely togehtger, we can make optimal use of our expertise. As an example; During the implementation of the Azure DevOps project, we ran into the problem that the existing solution we had was unnecessarily complex. As a result, the maintenance and further development of this solution would take a lot of time. We looked for an alternative and ended up with Terraform. Although this product was not yet in use, we investigated this with the DevOps team. After the solution met the technical and security requirements, the solution was put into use. ”
The next step is to create solutions where the IT team itself comes in contact with the internal customer and can independently implement features for improvement. In this way, the features are increasingly in line with the wishes of the end customer and they innovate at an ever faster pace.
